Anal Fissure
An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus, which can cause severe pain and bleeding during bowel movements. It is often caused by trauma to the anus such as passing firm or large stools, diarrhea, or anal intercourse. Chronic anal fissures can often be due to a hypertonic or high pressure internal anal sphincter muscle. Treatment includes dietary changes, topical ointments, injectable medications, and sometimes surgical intervention to promote healing.
